Serving the King’s Lynn Community
King’s Lynn is one of the most historically layered towns in England, a place where medieval merchants’ houses, Tudor guildhalls, Georgian facades and Victorian warehouses stand side by side along cobbled lanes and atmospheric quaysides on the River Great Ouse. At the height of its powers in the 14th century, King’s Lynn was the third busiest port in England, with trading links extending across northern Europe and the Baltic through the powerful Hanseatic League, a commercial network whose physical legacy can still be seen in the Hanseatic Warehouses dating from 1475, built around a narrow court just off the quay, and in Marriott’s Warehouse on the riverside, a Tudor building from around 1580 that once stored corn, salt, wine, timber and beer.
The town’s most iconic single building is the Custom House on Purfleet Quay, designed by the local architect Henry Bell and built in 1683 as a merchants’ exchange before being converted into a customs house in 1717. Described by Nikolaus Pevsner as one of the most perfect buildings ever built, it is a building whose elegance feels entirely at home in a town that knew how to spend its trading wealth. In front of it stands the statue of Captain George Vancouver, born in King’s Lynn in 1757, who explored and charted vast stretches of the Pacific coastline of North America and gave his name to the Canadian city that bears it to this day.
King’s Lynn Minster – the great church of St Margaret on the Saturday Market Place, founded in 1101, is one of the largest town churches in England, and contains the two largest medieval brasses in the country, a set of beautifully carved medieval misericords including a Green Man and flood level markings by the west door that tell the story of the town’s long relationship with the tides. A short walk away, St Nicholas’ Chapel, founded in 1225, is the largest chapel of ease in Britain and boasts the oldest angel roof in East Anglia. The Tuesday Market Place, described as quite possibly one of England’s grandest squares, houses the Corn Exchange, a 750-seat entertainment venue, and is ringed by buildings that speak of centuries of mercantile confidence.
The Lynn Museum holds one of the area’s most extraordinary exhibits, a full-sized replica of Seahenge, the 4,000-year-old Bronze Age timber circle that was uncovered on the Norfolk coast in 1998 when gales stripped back the beach at Holme-next-the-Sea. The remarkable original central upturned tree stump is also preserved there. In the historic park known as The Walks, the 15th-century Red Mount Chapel, a Grade I listed wayside chapel built for pilgrims on their way to the Shrine of Our Lady at Walsingham, features an upper chamber rebuilt in 1506 with beautiful fan-vaulted ceilings that are quite unlike anything else in the region.
Nearby, Greyfriars Tower is one of only three surviving Franciscan monastery towers in England and served for centuries as a navigation landmark for sailors picking their way through the treacherous waters of The Wash. Just a short drive from the town, the Royal Family’s country retreat at Sandringham and the magnificent Norman keep of Castle Rising complete a remarkable concentration of heritage that few towns of any size can match.
It is a town that rewards long-term investment and JW Kitchen Fitting is proud to serve the King’s Lynn community with the same honest, high-quality, personal service we bring to every location we work in.
